How to Become a Good Lawyer
There are a number of lawyers that add up to the industry every year. They are becoming more competitive and the competition in their industry is really getting high. According to some, lawyers have their motivations and reasons besides employment. Some of them were encouraged by their parents, some are for self fulfillment, some use it as a stepping stone for a future political career, and some are generous to offer their services to people who can’t afford to pay for lawyers. Others are inspired by what they see and witness happening around them especially injustice and other illegal acts.
How do we know if a lawyer is good? Are there requirements or standards that they should follow to be considered a good lawyer? Are there certain characteristics that they should posses? These are actually the questions that we have to find out if our lawyers can be considered as a good lawyer.
An initial requirement for a good lawyer is a bachelor’s degree including three courses under a registered law school. Also, a good lawyer must have a good personality and attitude towards his work. He should have a harmonious relationship with his colleagues and his clients.
For a lawyer to be good, he should be able to do critical thinking in all the cases he is handling. He should also apply analytical skills when solving problems. A good lawyer should always be organized when setting his goals, planning his activities to achieve pride and self-fulfillment. Lawyers with great English vocabulary and fluency are more ahead of their league which can be an advantage to them. This skill will help them communicate effectively with their clients. They would be able to express their opinions and suggestions inside a court room. A good lawyer should also have excellent writing skills. This will help him write a good report on his case and other legal documents needed to present his case. A good lawyer should also have enough knowledge on the related sciences and basic laws of logic, ethics, public speaking, constitutional rights, philosophy, economics, and foreign languages. A good lawyer is able to execute his job very well and he is very familiar with the case that he is handling. He also asks for the opinions and suggestions of his fellow lawyers and senior lawyers regarding his cases to get the different point of views that would best apply to the case.
The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) administers a test for all lawyers. It is a half day test, standardized, and a requirement for admission to all Law Schools. It also provides standard measures of acquired verbal reasoning and reading skills which can be used by law schools as a factor for assessment of applicants. This test is being administered 4 times a year in different locations world wide.
