Why are key words on resumes so important

When you are an employer, you would love to see a resume which points out directly the edge of the applicant against the others. But what many job seekers often do is to make their resumes very long and adds unnecessary details. What they don’t know is that they are making it hard for the employers to look for the most important information that the company is looking for in their employees. What they should have done is to directly show and prove to the employer that they are the best person for the job.

When making resumes, keywords are the answers. They are the chances on how you can tell directly what the employer is looking for. Sometimes, employers also use computers besides people to scan resumes. In this step, the computer looks for key words and decides which resumes precede with the application and which are rejected. To know more about tips on making resumes, you can read “Proven Resumes” written by Regina Pontow in 1999.

If you are looking for a job, make sure to underline the key words that were used in the ads. Choose 5 to 10 advertisements that are most interesting to you. Most of these advertisements will clearly specify the skills that the company is looking for. Take note or underline the skills written that match your personal skills. Always read the important words written in an advertisement. Don’ overlook on the most important words like average job seekers do.

All related skills should be grouped in different categories. All the words that you have underlined should be organized into a list. As an example, if 2 of your underlined words include “handle customer relationship” and “build customer relationship”, you can create a list for it entitled “Account Administration”; or if you have underlined words like “answer phone calls”, and “typing 60 words per minute”, you can create a list for it entitled “Office and Administrative Work”.

Learn to give priority to the skills. Decide on which of the skills are the most important on the job advertisements. This step is important because you need to present these skills during your interview or while writing your resume. It is important that you have these skills because it is what the company is looking for.

From the list of the skills that you have created, pick out the top or the best. Use these words to write a summarized statement about you, your qualification, and experience that will make you the best person for the job. Be sure to put these statements at the top of your resume. Studies show that a person spends 30 seconds when looking at resumes, so make sure that your key words are found on top of your resumes so employers will be able to see that you are a qualified applicant. Make sure that you use all your underlined words in your resume. Use these underlined words as much as possible. In this way, you will make the employers see what they are looking for.
